This letter is for you, you that is looking back at your life in regret instead of looking forward. You that is looking back at your life and can’t identify the person that you have become. You that is looking back at your life and realizing that in a quest of making everyone around happy, you have lost yourself. For everyone that’s looking back at their lives and seeing a series of mistakes and sins, for everyone that’s looking back at 2019 and thinking that 2020 will just get worse up the same, this letter is for you. I don’t know if you are a follower, but I am glad you stumbled on this letter. It’s also a letter for me, to realize how much I have done and what I have become.
Most times when you look back at your life, there will be moments that stick out as memories. You will regret some, love some, miss some and there’s probably one thing that will make you think, “what was I thinking?”. Don’t allow that to destroy your future. You may have made mistakes in your marriage, at your former place of work, you may have even wasted your youth, but never hold unto past mistakes. You may have damaged yourself beyond repairs but God is not done with you. You may even have wasted so much time on someone, but realise that everything happens for a reason.
No matter what you have faced in the past, no matter what the challenges were, no matter what is happening to you right now, I want you to know that you are still qualified for God’s favour. Don’t keep looking back at your life in regret and don’t keep looking at what someone has done wrong to you, just keep going forward because that’s the only way you can let go of your past. You also need to stop seeking for acceptance from others. Accept yourself for who you are instead because that’s all that matters. Don’t allow your circumstances cause you to conclude that everything you did, say, think or believed was utterly ridiculous that even you can’t believe it.
Learn from the mistakes you’ve made in the past and let them help craft the person you are today and the person you want to become tomorrow. There was a time you thought you’d never be standing to where you are now. There was a time you thought you will never have children because the doctor’s report says so but today that’s not the case because you have God’s report. There was a time you couldn’t pay your rent but today you are in your own house. There was a time life was so unbearable you became depressed and suicidal but today you have become a champion of hope. There was a time when you felt you were a nobody but today you are somebody special, not just to God, but to humanity. There was a time when you didn’t know God and His awesome power but today He’s using fire His marvellous work.
You will know that God is going to continue to do great things in your life when you remember that there was a time you felt so lonely and alone in the midst of everyone you ever knew but today you have realized that you were never alone. God’s hands were on you. He took care of you without you even knowing it. He was the one connecting everything and fitting them together for your good. The things that didn’t work out, were all for you good. When you couldn’t keep yourself, God kept you. He was the one who shaped and manoeuvred things for you to be at this point. The same God who made a way last time will make a way this time.
In your journey of faith, things don’t always pay off, but when you look back at your life, when you look at the things that could have killed you, when you look at how far you have come, all the most important victories, friendships, loves, heartbreaks, adventures, and courage-building failures, you will agree that they all came after a leap of faith. So today, walk by faith and not by sight. Walk by faith and not by the regrets of the past. Thank those who tried to break you, those who hurt you and those who told you “you can’t”. Forgive those who deserve it even if they decline.
One day, when you look back at your life and piece together the events, good or bad, you’ll be grateful and realize why that person, event, relationship and situation didn’t work out. While it will be hard to forget them, you can see how they led you to where you are today — it’s no accident. You will realize that without them you wouldn’t be where you are. You will realize that everything that happened to you was nothing but a blessing from God. You will realise that every detail was perfectly orchestrated by God. Every moment of weakness, mistakes, failures, rejections and every memory you want to forget has forged you into the person you are today. So put them in a box and look at the person you are today. Never run from your past but learn from it and grow in it. I promise you that when you look back at your life critically you won’t regret the things you did. You will regret the things you didn’t do.
Look back at your life and let the memories make you smile. Look back at your life and remind yourself that you are never too old to get a degree or a second degree. Success is when you look back at your life and the memories make you smile. Your present-day reality might not have met with your expectation but be someone better the next day than you were the day before. You may not have hope right now, but stand strong in faith. Don’t let the things you hate defeat you. Don’t let your circumstances paralyze you from going for what you want. Remind yourself that you are never too old to switch careers neither are you too old to do whatever you want to do.
Until tomorrow, always remember that what you do today will determine how you feel when you look back at your life in 10 years. Stop putting a limitation on what you can be, have or do. Make this day the best day of your life. Tick off everything that’s on your bucket list and let your life count. Forget your past, forgive yourself and begin again by taking some risks in life. Say no to distractions but have faith in what makes you feel more alive. Have faith in what you love. Have faith in your giant, frightening mind and most importantly, have faith in God so that when you look back at your life, you will be glad you did something instead of nothing and you won’t have to regret the roads you didn’t take! Have faith in God knowing that He alone can turn the ashes of what you’ve gone through into beauty for His display. Have faith in God, and He will “do what you want most and let all go well for you” — Psalms 20:4 (CEV).
